Your Opportunity:

The Population, Public and Indigenous Health Strategic Clinical Network (PPIH SCN) has a significant opportunity to improve the health of the population of Alberta, including Indigenous peoples, by focusing on upstream efforts and health equity, creating and building on community empowerment, and transforming health service delivery to address racism and focus more on determinants of health and prevention. The PPIH SCN is the mechanism through which AHS plans to achieve on-going provincial improvement in health, patient outcomes and experience, health improvement and sustainability of Alberta's health system. The Research Associate (RA) will support them in the achievement of Transformational Roadmaps (TRMs). The RA will work collaboratively with project team members to successfully support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of research projects occurring across the identified Strategic Directions. The role will support practical research engagement on-site (e.g. assisting with a community-level Knowledge Translation events, land-based research activity or community research engagement meeting/s) or by distance (e.g. environmental scan or literature review for a proposal), under the supervision of the Scientific Office. You will advance the PPIH SCN's research goals (aligned with the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences' health research evaluation framework), specifically to advance knowledge (knowledge generation and mobilization); build research capacity; inform decision-making; impact health; and create broad economic and social impacts. All Non-Union Exempt positions are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. If this position is impacted, the incumbent will be notified accordingly.


The Research Associate (RA) will: Provide scientific methods and advanced analytical support for scientific initiatives. Provide data, information and research evidence to research team to support critical decision making regarding project, program and services designed by the research team. Contribute specific technical research functions as a team member on projects or in support of Scientists. Work independently to adapt methods, techniques and procedures to solve a range of complex problems. Participate in data interpretation. Work collaboratively with the projects team(s) to ensure project evaluation deliverables are met, project timelines are attained, and to ensure that initiatives are built on current evidence, as well as generating new practice-based evidence. Provide scientific consultation to stakeholders. Obtain the literature/background to support modifications in scientific approach. Incumbent will gather, compile, synthesize, interpret, analyze, and report on literature searches. Support research team to identify data elements needed and implement clear procedures for collecting, documenting and reporting data. Lead the development and implementation of data collection tools/instruments. Apply recognized scientific rigor to select from the most appropriate methodological options. Facilitate knowledge transfer of research results (evidence) to inform decision making. Develop networks in order to resolve issues and exchange information. Escalate when facing problems beyond own scope. Use problem solving approaches to address issues within scope of practice and seeks guidance where necessary. Possess ability to collaborate with administrators, researchers, and planners. Take responsibility for being a contributing member to work teams. Develop, plan and set priorities to meet multiple projects and objectives.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate possesses a minimum of a Master's degree in a health-related field and a minimum of three years' experience in a population health -related field. Experience with quantitative research methodologies in public health research. Demonstrated skills and experience in research methods, particularly quantitative research methodologies and bio-statistical analyses, strong technical writing skills and ability to translate complex scientific evidence for informed decision making. Ability to work simultaneously on a variety of projects. Excellent interpersonal and team skills. At least two years' experience working with statistical analysis software (SAS, Stata or SPSS preferred). Firm understanding of research design and methods. Self-directed with strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Strong written and oral skills for the use in the development of oral presentations, summaries, reports, journal articles, systematic literature reviews, and manuscripts, etc. Knowledge of social determinants of health and associated modifiable risk factors, including strategies and best practice evidence. Experience in literature reviews and synthesis of large amounts of information. Ability to manage and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Ability to work with and build sustaining complex relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. Ability to facilitate and participate in working groups and steering committees. Knowledge of project management methodology in a health care setting. Demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to navigate through AHS systems and processes. Strong computer skills and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and relational databases.
